Smartphones to Smart Cities – How Technology Is Impacting Our Lives

The Internet of Things did more than just connect our devices to one another – IoT is the driving force behind the latest digital trend of improving everything… or in other words, making our lives just a little bit ‘smarter.’

Just a few years ago the idea of a smartphone was as foreign as DVD’s were to VHS executives in the 80’s. It was a time where mobile phones in cars were a novelty and a computer with 8 MHz and 128K RAM was considered powerful. Today innovation is all around us and as consumers, we are demanding more technology at a quicker pace that does more than what we expect it to do.

Watches are no longer expected to simply tell us the time, but also our heart rates, the number of steps we take, how many calories we burned and where we are. Cars should do more than help us get places, they should take us places! The list continues but the future is clear – technology has altered the way we live.

What was once known as “disruptive technology” is no longer disruptive but rather expected, and enhancement of features is a byproduct of that expectation.

The Enterprise Race for Smarter + Stronger Technology

Analysts across all news sources, research publications and consumer studies, know that within the next few years, billions of devices will be interconnected in a complex system of technology and innovation to help us improve daily tasks from remembering to drink water to flying us across the ocean. What they cannot agree on is how many devices, simply because consumer consumption of technology is surpassing all predictions.

It is not surprising that the rise in the number of Internet enabled devices comes at a time when millennial’s are the driving power behind the world workforce with technology adaptation practically starting at birth.

Enterprises always ensure they uphold their market share and are constantly concerned with their company’s growth, but at the same time recognize the needs of modern consumers so adapt their strategies to integrate smarter technology, on stronger devices, in a shorter time than ever. What this means for the end user is cutting-edge technology often at a reduced cost.  While it is not always easy to meet all demands, the modern shift enterprises are undergoing that connects them even more to startups will surely be the driving force in the onset of new technology that is affordable and scalable.

To offer new innovation and not spend years on R&D and in house development, many enterprises are seeking out startups in order to collaborate on new technology. Startups which live up to the expectations and continue to change the world with new technology that is game changing, innovative and disruptive (sometimes all at once) have always led the innovation train, but rarely got a chance to showcase it on an enterprise level. The reason for this was always due to the overwhelming amount of red tape and bureaucracy that startups previously had to endure in order to reach decision makers in enterprises to consider their solution.

Plainly put, the brilliant founders and forward thinking enterprises were rarely in the same place. Now prooV, the pilot-as-a-service technology enterprises and startups are able to communicate directly in order to improve technology and scale new solutions quickly.

If enterprises, up until now, invested heavily in their own R&D to develop technology and use it to enhance their own offerings, today they do not need to as much. In an effort to stay one step ahead of the game, enterprises have rightfully turned to startups in the hopes of snagging new innovative technology and scaling it up quicker.

The Future Is Smarter Than You Think

Step away from the tech conventions and you will see that urbanization is one of the driving forces behind technological developments. Whether focusing on CleanTech, Smart Health, Smart Cars or even Smart Cities, the driving force connecting these is urban development.

Urban dwellers are consuming 75% of the natural resources and responsible for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions. These staggering numbers are the driving force behind the push to clean technology that will renew and preserve our world.

As more people are born and require more resources, so will our technology need to meet the needs of the new generation. The future of smart cities is therefore in the ability of our devices to not only connect to one another but to intelligently guide us as humans living in a machine world.

As technology advances (and enterprises and startups fine tune their relationships) urban living will be smarter, safer and healthier. Will we be boarding a flying car Jetson style in the near future? Probably not. But can we expect a self-driving car that will prevent accidents and help save our environment by not using gas? Probably.
